Audio Release of Omega VR Music Application

September 11, 2024

I’m excited to announce the release of the audio tracks from the award-winning VR music application “Omega” to Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and iTunes!

This application has been showcased at TENOR Boston 2023, EVA London 2023 conferences, as well as the Festival Sœurs Jumelles music festival in Rochefort in both 2023 and 2024. The “Coup de coeur” award from VRJAM Toulouse 2023 recognized Omega as the most promising initiative in the Music XR field.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the idea behind the “Omega” VR application:

“Omega” introduces a new genre in Music XR – volumetric music composition, where the user interacts with the structure of the composition. The work was inspired by the semantic duality of the Messier 17 nebula’s names (Omega and Swan), which reflect the essence of human existence – the aspiration to eternal beauty and the finality of life. Through interaction with the nebula’s visual shapes, users co-create an audio and visual universe in a transcendent VR experience.

Interlace VR project

The creation of meta non-verbal narration through the exploration of the semantics of the physical world has emerged as a prevalent theme in contemporary art projects.

This is achieved either through digital simulations of atmospheric physics, by encouraging interaction with atmospheric elements in the real world, or by liquids motion visualisation with the particles, from which emerge shapes generated by AI or EEG devices (a full conference presentation can be found here).

The project “Interlace” aims to design a transitional space that bridges the aesthetics of modern art exhibitions, with interactive VR technology, creating an interactive art space guided by the logic of music form development.

The objective was practically realised by taking an existing 2D digital artwork “Carnaval of Colour” created by Terry Trickett to the music from my piano album “Colours” and transforming it to an interactive VR experience. Current iteration of the project features the first visualisation “Interlace”.

This project draws inspiration from the concept of volumetric music composition, where the music composition’s nodes are accessible for user interaction in a non-linear fashion. An experiment with users indicated that while interactivity in VR was highly valued, it was not universally desired. For instance, the necessity to interact with the spheres, representing the stages of music form development to trigger the sound, was found by some users as disrupting music immersion. Hence, in the current interaction design we left the possibility to choose the level of engagement with the VR environment, without disrupting musical flow.

The project implements a novel concept of volumetric music composition.

The volumetric music composition extends the definition of music XR to the level of music architectonic manipulation, while the known definition of music XR is characterized by conditions, in which musical elements are controlled through manipulations of their properties, such as pitch, timbre or dynamics.

Being inspired by Messier 17 nebula, also referred to as Swan and Omega, the project embraces the semantic duality associated with the nebula names, proposing two paths of compositional space exploration, where each path is characterized by its music, shape and color profiles.

The semantic duality of Messier 17 nebula names (Omega and Swan) reflects the very essence of human existence – the aspiration to the eternal beauty and the finality of existence.

The user interaction with the constructive elements of each of the paths affects not only the musical change but a colorization of a surrounding space as well. Thus, the user co-creates an audio and visual universe in a transcendent VR experience.

Jeremi Wiśniowiecki, the hero of the first part of the symphony, was Ukrainian landlord of the 15th century, implementing new economic laws of development, which resulted in a creation of more than 50 towns. His son, Michał Tomasz Korybut Wiśniowiecki, became a Polish king and was the most educated monarch of the epoch, who spoke 8 languages. He was poisoned at the age of 33. His main motif in the 2nd part of Saga is the stylization of the estampie theme, which receives a crystal sounding being accompanied by celesta with harpsichord, symbolizing the beauty of intellect and knowledge, which acquired the highest priority in the information society context. The sudden dramatic culmination is highlighted by another plucked string instrument – mandolin.

Motrona Komorowska. Part III

The dramatic life of Motrona Komorowska, a young orphaned noble girl whose life was mutilated by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the head of Cossacks’ army, and who was later hanged by his son, is a testimony of a woman existence of the epoch. The third part contains a woman’s voice cry along with a following requiem singing of the choir.

And then… Part IV

The 4th part outlines the decay of Ukraine after Khmelnytsky “sold” it to Russian Empire, having signed a pact, humiliating for Ukrainians. The hymns were the historical testimonies of the epochs, and their major mode is in a big contrast to the repressions, holodomors, cultural, intellectual and physical elimination of the Ukrainian nation. The Russian Empire is represented by Russian patriotic song “Slav’sya”, the Soviet Union is represented by Soviet song “Lenin is always with you!”; finally, the Orange Revolution song represents Orange Revolution, which could not prevent further tragic events, such as kills during Euromaidan in 2014 and Russian-Ukrainian war. A spirit of the tragedy was already in the air back in 2011.
