Scarlet Sails

For chamber orchestra

In a little village near the sea a mariner celebrated his marriage. He offered a beautiful scarlet scarf to his young wife. The next day, he had to go to a sea for a year. While the mariner was absent his wife gave birth to a little girl and died soon after. When the mariner returned he found the grave of his beloved wife and a little daughter, Assol.

The life of the little girl in her village wasn’t simple: the children didn’t accept her. The only friends she found were the elves in the forest near the beach. In this forest, she met a stranger, an old man who told her that one day a ship with scarlet sails will arrive and aboard the ship, there will be a young duke who will marry her. Assol believed that old man and grew up with this only hope.

The time passed and Assol reached the age of 16. She still believed in the tale told by the old stranger, so she often went to the forest near the beach to dance with her imaginative lover, but with age her notions of social stratification had been formed and the belief that some young duke could ever marry her, poor girl from a little village, also began to bring her sadness and pain. While she was crying she fell asleep in the forest. At that moment a young stranger, who just arrived with his ship and was walking nearby, appeared in the forest. His name was Gray and he was the son of a duke from the other side of the country, he had lost her mother in a very young age and had hated the high life and its notions, so he bought a ship to travel with and to find the meaning of life. In the forest, he was submerged by his thoughts about his life, about the years passed on the sea and about the sense of life he was looking for and didn’t find yet. Suddenly he remarked beautiful young girl, which were asleep on a rock. A strange feeling came to him, as he was deeply touched by her appearance and the desire to protect this little creature against all the ills of the world suddenly came to his heart. But he only took the scarlet scarf and went to the village to learn more about the girl.

In the village, he met young villagers. He began to question them about her by showing them the scarlet scarf. They mocked Assol and the story about the young duke on the ship with scarlet sails she believed. They threw the scarf on the ground and left with a laugh. Gray picked up the scarf and began to dance with – the deep and true love overflew his heart. He decided to make Assol’s dream come true and replaced the sails on his ship by scarlet sails to come to Assol.

The next day Assol awoke and went to the beach and what an astonishment she had when she saw the ship with scarlet sails approaching her! A young man with beautiful eyes full of kindness and love came to her and asked her to be his wife! It’s impossible to describe the happiness that both young people felt: Assol’s dream came true and Gray finally found the meaning of his life.
